The Birds of America 1858-1860
Seven years after
their father’s death, Audubon’s sons began an American Edition of
Birds of America with Julius Bien, a New York printer who was pioneering the
field of chromolithography. Bien transferred images from Robert Havell’s
copperplates onto lithographic stones. Then, as many as thirty printing stages
with additional hand
coloring were used to reproduce the subtleties of the original engravings. The
Bien Edition was begun in 1858. Production was brought to a sudden halt by the
outbreak of Civil War, making the Bien Edition the most rare of all Audubon editions. There is now evidence of a 2nd printing circa 1871.
