Marc Elieser Bloch M.D. (1723-1799) |
March Bloch was a German medical doctor, born in Anspach, but who practiced in Berlin. Like many other medical professionals of the 18th Century, Bloch developed a passion for Natural History, focusing on fish, he became one the most important ichthyologists of that century. His great work of twelve volumes, Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische 1782-1795 and the almost simultaneous French edition Ichthylogie ou Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere des Poissons 1785-1797 are often referred to as the most beautiful books on fishes ever published. The 432 plates he described and had illustrated covered not only the fishes of Germany but also of the world. The handcoloring is sometimes heightened with silver, gold and bronze to produce the metallic sheen of fish scales. Bloch’s collection of almost 1,500 specimens is preserved in the Museum of Natural History of the Humbolt University of Berlin.
